When joints aren't moving properly due to repetitive stress or injury, the nerves exiting those joints can become irritated and pain can occur. Spinal mobilization restores motion where it has been lost, ensuring that all joints are moving as they should, thereby decreasing inflammation and pain.
Muscles, ligaments and tendons make up what is known as "soft tissue". In conjunction with joints that are not moving properly, many patients also have tight and tender muscles that are overworked and could benefit from Soft Tissue Therapy.
Graston Technique® is an evidence-based form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization. This technique enables clinicians to effectively address scar tissue and fascial restrictions, resulting in improved patient outcomes.
Active care such as rehabilitative exercise is very important to achieve overall stability in an injured area. This type of exercise also keeps a previously injured area strong, preventing re-injury. Rehabilitative exercises may be performed in the office or given as homework, and are specific to each patient and their condition.
Prior to or following soft tissue techniques and joint mobilization, moist heat or cryotherapy (ice therapy) may be used during a patient's visit. Each of these techniques provides benefits with regard to reduced inflammation and pain, and can speed healing time.
Electrical Muscle Stimulation, sometimes known as a TENS unit (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation), can reduce pain and promote healing. Often used in conjunction with Moist Heat Therapy, this technique is a great way to start off a treatment session.
RockTape is an elastic kinesiology tape used by many athletes, from recreational to Olympic. Benefits of this tape include enhanced performance and reduce fatigue/injury.
